“What I want to talk to you about is not if we are going to change the world, but how are we going to do it. We are inheriting a world filled with a kind of peril that other generations never faced. The good news is that we are going to have tools that previous generations never had. It is time to start preparing the next generation of students who will become the next leaders in our community and who will be in charge of solving the hardest challenges of the world. And that initiative starts at Vanier College right here, right now. The Vanier Techno Talks will not only showcase good speakers with great interdisciplinary research projects in Computer Science, but it will also be a source of scientific inspiration in a networking environment.” – Santiago Paiva, Science

The first VTT presentation will be on:

Date: Wednesday, April 20, 2011
Time: 12:00 to 13:30
Location: D-221 (Vanier College)

It will feature the following speakers:

Stephen Cohen, Physics (12:05 pm – 12:30 pm)
What does an engineer do? Most people in society do not know much about the engineering profession. Even science students who apply to university to study engineering have little idea what an engineering career entails. In essence, an engineer is a problem solver within the realm of science. The range of tools available to engineers in order to solve these problems effectively grows continuously. FEM software, for example, solves thousands of equations of physics in seconds, and has enabled engineers to work faster and deliver a more optimized product than ever before. But, don’t worry, these virtual tools are still just tools, and you will still need to make use of all of those physics courses you took. If you think that engineers spend their work day drawing free body diagrams, then this is the talk for you.

Haritos Kavallos, Computer Science grad (12:30 pm – 12:55 pm)
Data Warehousing an Empire – Wal-Mart has built a globalized empire that sees among the worlds largest profit returns. How does Wal-Mart stay ahead of the game? A large part of their continuing success lies in their vast Data Warehousing and Decision Support Systems. Come sit in on this TechnoTalk to find out more!

Michel Paquette, Computer Science (12:55 pm – 1:20 pm)
A known problem of cheap communication devices is that of swamping, where nodes may only successfully communicate with other nodes that are far enough from them. Nodes in fact disrupt communication processes of all nodes within distance r (the maximum range) from them, but communicate only with those nodes at a distance greater than s (the swamping range) and within r. We present an algorithm to broadcast under this communication model, in networks of nodes located in the plane with unknown topology.

All are welcome!
